Spring Summer series 2 Day Final 2018

Sun 20 August 17 - Rookery Waters - Jay & Magpie Lakes

Match report by Ray Best

The annual Rookery Waters/Tackle & Bates Spring Summer series 2 Day Final sponsored by www.ukmatchangler.com. This annual event took place on the superb Rookery Waters Fishery in rural Cambridgeshire. After 30 qualifying rounds, 46 anglers made it through to the final, which is fished on Jay & Magpie lakes, with the anglers fishing both lakes over the two days for their chance of winning the £1000 top prize.

Day 1 Magpie Lake

The strong variable winds made presenting a bait on the pole at range very difficult for most, making fishing down the edge or the top 2 + 1 lines the key to success on the day.

The lake winner on day 1 went to March based Ian Darrington. Fishing catmeat in the margins. Fishing peg 7, Ian caught steadily all day to put together a very impressive 187lb 14ozs for top spot. A very close second on the lake was Gavin Butler who fished to his right hand margin to put 182lbs 5ozs on the scales.

Day 1 Jay Lake

With the Jay having less protection from the 20mph variable winds, and with the pressure changing by the hour, the majority of the anglers struggled to produce the constant sport that this lake usually produces. With bites being at a premium for many of the anglers taking part, but for those who who persevered, the rewards were there to be caught.

Fishing maggot down the track and in the margins, Hooked Newmarket back rod Mark Cross fished to the far margin to put together a very impressive 94lbs from peg 14. This was very impressive considering he had to deal with a side wind that made fishing the long pole virtually impossible.

One angler who took good advantage of a back wind was Simon Godfrey on peg No.28. Simon fished to the far margin and close in to put 83lbs 10ozs in the net for a comfortable second place on the lake.

Day 2

Day two produced a dramatic improvement in conditions, with broken cloud, plenty of sunshine and a most importantly to all taking part, the gusting winds of day one had subsided over night and replaced by a steady 10 mph westerly breeze, making the going for all on both lakes far better for the anglers.

Day 2 Magpie Lake

Magpie absolutely fished its head off today, with over 150lbs required for a section win in all sections, The tactics that produced the numerous ton plus weights was maggot in the margins, whicxh made for a very competitive last few hours, with several anglers fighting for a lake win.

Top spot went to Adam Swain with a superb 218lbs 14ozs from peg 38. The Dynamite backed rod fished down the edge and to the Lilly’s shallow to win the lake by nearly 20lbs

Second place on Magpie was secured with 191lbs 10ozs by Hooked Newmarket backed Mark Cross from peg 26. He fished down the edge all day with maggot to steadily catch all day, landing fish to 9lbs.

Day 2 Jay Lake

As on day one the going was well below par, with presentation still being an issue for many, with the wind still dictating the tactics for most of the angler. Yet again, those who adapted to the conditions the quickest, reaped the rewards.

Lake winner on Jay on day 2 was Gav Butler. He fishing peg 14 to put together an impressive 124lbs 04ozs, consisting of mainly carp, with a bonus barbel thrown in for good measure. Gavin caught on maggot to the far margin, down the track and in the margins.

Second on the lake was Bait-Tech backed Tony Dawson on Peg 32. Tony fished the margins all day to amass 113lbs 04ozs of carp up to 8lbs. Tony put in a sterling performance to comfortably beat the anglers around him.

Saturday the 25th of March – Day One

Day one of the 2 day final was fished in reasonable conditions, with a gentle easterly wind, with clear blue skies and the 13 degree constant temperature made it feel very comfortable bank side.

On the day, those who figured out that slapping shallow followed bu fishing the same line at dead depth, was the way forward on this far from easy days sport.

Alternating hookbaits and regularly changing the presentation, produced the good for those who put in the effort on what was turning out to be a very challenging day for the majority of the field.

Spring Summer series 2 Day Final 2016

Sun 21 August 16 - Rookery Waters - Jay & Magpie Lakes

After 30 weeks of qualifying rounds, 48 anglers arrived at the venue to fish the annual 2 Day final at Rookery Waters. The match was fished on Jay & Magpie lakes, with the anglers split into two groups of 24, with 4 × 6 peg sections on each lake. With near gale force winds and intermittent heavy showers forecast for both days the conditions were going to be far from perfect for this prestigious event.

Saturday the 20th of August – Day One

Jay Lake

Strong winds played a major factor in the sport for most on what turned out to be a pole anglers nightmare. The wind was so strong, virtually all the field found presenting baits on the long pole near on impossible, with the majority of anglers having to resort to either fishing down the edge or on the feeder to the far margins.

John Shepherd peg 30

Top spot on the lake on day one was taken by Sensas Colemans backed John Shepherd on peg 30 who caught well close in the first couple of hours but to keep the bites coming, he then switched over to a small pellet feeder with dead red maggots as his chosen hookbait. john fished his feeder rig tight to the far bank to amass a very impressive 122lbs 2ozs in what can only be described as appalling conditions.

Second on the lake went to Matrix/Dynamite backed Tom Edwards on peg 13. Tom fished a hybrid feeder with meat tight to the far bank to catch steadily all day to finish the match with a 100lbs 6ozs well ahead of the following pack.

Section Winners

A Section – Stewart Bracey (Shimano/Dynamite) peg 7 – 75lbs 4ozs
B Section – Tome Edwards (Matrix/Dynamite) Peg 13 – 100lbs 6ozs
C Section – John Shepperd (Sensas Colemans) Peg 30 – 122lbs 2ozs
D Section – Kev Shellie (Hooked Newmarket) Peg 38 – 62lbs 6ozs

Magpie Lake

Unlike the anglers on Jay, because of the mature bank side tree cover, the wind wasn’t playing as big a part as it was on Jay lake, with the majority of anglers finding presenting baits on the long pole far easier but the margins were the place to find the big weights.

Kev Peacock peg 38

On fancied peg 38, venue regular Kev Peacock put in yet another very impressive down the edge. fishing tight to the marginal rushes on both sides of his swim, the local rod utilised his vast local knowledge to catch down the edge on pellet and paste to put together a very impressive 195lbs 12ozs for top spot.

Second on the lake went to Josh Pace on peg 18. The Cambridgeshire based rod fish meat down the edge shallow to put 190lbs 14ozs on the scales, to secure a very close second on the lake but most importantly a section win.

Jay Lake

Conditions we much better but the wind had now changed direction and was still making conditions hard going for the majority of the 24 anglers fising Jay lake. As on the previous day, the better weights came to a small feeder fished tight over or alternatively down the edge with corn, meat and paste all producing good weights.

Jay lake day 2 winner Simon Easay

Top weight on the day fell to Simon Easey on peg 30. Simon combated the strong side winds by fishing a sall feeder to the far bank, to finish the day with a well earned 109lbs 6ozs. Mon 24 August 15 - Rookery Waters - Jay and Magpie Lakes

Rookery Waters £1000 Two Day Festival

Saturday the 22nd & Sunday the 23rd of August 2015

After 33 qualifying rounds, the 56 qualifiers arrived at Rookery waters on a blisteringly hot, sunny day where temperatures were expected to reach 30 degrees plus. Add to the equation a blustery southerly wind and the conditions were going to be far from perfect for day one of the first Rookery Waters £1000 two day festival. After a hearty breakfast and the usual pre-match banter, the draw took place and the field were split into two groups of 28, with one group drawing Jay Lake (yellow Key Tags) and the second drawing Magpie Lake (Red Key Tags).

Over the two days the first and second in each section on both lakes would receive £50 for a section win and £30 for second by default. Over the two days the top 5 anglers over all based on points and if required weight count-back would receive £1000 for 1st, £500 for 2nd, £250 for 3rd and £150 for 4th, with all trophies being sponsored by ukmatchangler.com

Day one – Jay Lake

With the wind picking up during the day and gusting at speeds of up to 20 miles an hour, the lakes residents decided to make the going exceptionally hard for the majority of the field.

A section pegs 1 to 11

Top spot going to Kev Shellie on peg number 3, the Hooked Newmarket backed rod fished the pole long and close in, to take a hard earned 46lbs 6ozs. Second in section was Ramsey AC rod Paul Kilby, the Ramsey based rod fished the long pole on peg 11 to take 23lbs 8ozs on the long pole.

B Section pegs 13 to 26,

Mainly because of blistering heat and swirling, gusty winds making presentation a very hard task. Top spot was taken by Dynamite Baits backed Tony Evans on peg 16.He fished the long pole to the far bank to take mainly carp up to 3lbs for 47lbs 4ozs. Second in section went to Geoff Arnold (Hooked Newmarket) on peg 19, Geoff also thought the strong winds to fish the long pole to take 28lbs 8ozs,

C Section pegs 27 to 36

This section produced the most consistent sport on the lake. Top spot went to Gav Butler (Tackle & Bates) on peg 30. He took 64lbs 12lbs of mainly carp up to 5lbs on the long pole, to comfortably win his section. Second spot went to Shimano/Dynamite backed Stuart Bracey on peg 33. He took a mixed bag including carp to 3lbs for 28lbs on the long pole and close in.

D Section pegs 38 to 47

This was one of the worst affected by the wind as the wind was blowing from the right to left of the anglers, making fishing the long pole virtually impossible. However, Jimmy Brooks (Middy Bait-Tech) on peg 45 sorted thing out to take a mixed bag of mainly carp, putting 46lbs 10ozs on the scales for top spot in the section. In second place was Coleman’s Bait & Tackle backed John Shepperd, who fished the small method feeder to the far bank to take second in the section with 43lbs 12ozs.

Day One – Magpie Lake

With Magpie producing some incredible weights during the qualifying rounds and competing anglers expectations being very high. The conditions were yet again making the going very tough for many.

A Section pegs 1 to 7

This section produced the two biggest weights on the lake. On peg 1 was local rod Martyn Freeman (Decoy) who fished shallow to the lily pads at 12m to take carp steadily all day to amass a very impressive 204lbs 10 ozs for the section win. On Peg 2 Dynamite Baits backed Tom Edwards also fished shallow to the lily pads to take 150lbs 2ozs and second in the section.

B Section pegs 9 to 17

With many anglers finding the going very hard until the last 2 hours. Guru/Bag’em backed Barry mason on peg 12 who took 130lbs of carp to 8lbs plus, for a comfortable section win, fished close in to put together a very hard earned weight. Second spot went to Sean Higginbottom (Tackle & Bates), he fished shallow and down the edge to take 119lbs 8ozs from peg 14.

C Section pegs 18 to 25

This section was thought out between the anglers on peg 18 and peg 25. Top spot went to Garbolino backed Graham Welton on peg 25, who fished at 15m to the lily pads and down the edge to take 130lbs. Second in section went to Shimano/Dynamite backed Mark Pollard. Mark fished the method to the island for the majority of his fish with a few on the pole at 6m and down the edge to give him a total of 117lbs 14ozs.

D Section – pegs 26 to 38

This was a very closely contended section. Top spot went to St Neots based Tony Watling Snr, Tony took 129lbs 14ozs on the pole long and close in, for an all carp bag. Second in section was Rob Anstee (Tackle & Bates) on peg 32, rob fished the long pole shallow to the rushes and down the edge for a total weight of 115lbs 12ozs

Day Two -Jay Lake

Totally different conditions greeted the 28 anglers competing on Jay lake on day two. With strong winds gusting at 30mph and heavy rain forecast mid afternoon, the change in pressure and temperature made the lake switch on and produce far better weights than on day one.

A section pegs 1 to 11

Top spot in A section went to Richard Bond on peg 7, he fished the long pole to the far bank to take carp up to 4lbs to amass a total weight of 74lbs 6ozs. Second in section went to Rab Egan on peg 10, he fished various tactics to put together a total weight of 70lbs.

B Section pegs 13 to 26,

Second in section went to Tony Watling Snr, who took a mixed bag including a 7lbs barbel for a total weight of 54lbs 2ozs

C Section pegs 27 to 36

Sean Higginbottom put in a very good performance fishing long in swirling winds to put together a total weight of 84lbs 12ozs consisting of mainly carp. Second spot in this section went to Graham Welton on peg 29, he fished to the far bank and close in for a mainly carp haul.

D Section pegs 38 to 47

Dynamite Baits backed Tom Edwards put in a very impressive performance to catch carp on the pole, catching at 6m and over to the far margin to weigh in 85lbs 10ozs from peg 44. Second in the section went to Rob Anstee on peg 46, he fished the long pole down the margin to a blank platform, to weigh in 80lbs 10ozs.

Day Two – Magpie Lake

The conditions yet again played a major part in the performance of the lake. After the poor performance of Jay lake the day before, all anglers were anticipating a much better days sport from this fish packed lake. Unlike the previous day, Magpie produced a few surprise results from pegs that had not performed on the previous day.

A Section pegs 1 to 7

Gav Butler took top spot in this section on from peg 7, the Lincolnshire based rod fished shallow at 16m and down the edge to finish up with 186lbs 10ozs. Second in section went to The youngest angler fishing the event, Finley Bulbeck on peg 5. He fished shallow to the open water rushes and down the edge for a total weight of 107lbs 8ozs

C Section pegs 18 to 25

Middy backed Jimmy Brooks followed up his day one section win with an impressive 152lbs 4ozs from peg 22, taking his fish on the method to the island, with the bulk of his weight coming from the margins. Second in section was taken from peg 23 by Stuart Bracey, the Shimano/Dynamite backed rod took 114lbs 6oz, mostly down the edge.

D Section – pegs 26 to 38

Yaxeley based Si Dow fished peg 31 on the island and took the section with 95lbs 14ozs of carp. He fished the majority of the match down the edge as presentation at range was severely hindered by the gusting winds. Second in the section was taken by Charley Laurence, he fished shallow to the lily pads at 9m and 13m to land an all carp bag of 82lbs 12ozs.

Final Results

After the weigh in was finished, all anglers headed back to the Rookery Cafe and Tackle shop for a beer and BBQ, which I have to say was very enjoyable. Whilst also giving the patiently waiting anglers an opportunity to wind down after a very competitive days sport.

With the top three on each lake and first and second in all sections being paid out, The final results took some time to finalise based on the amount of section winners picking up money by default. Once all the of these winners paid out, it was time for the all important top 6 places to be announced
