MMT Qualifier round 9

Sun 28 May 17 -

Another superb Match This qualifier event at The Glebe / Mallory park with some truly outstanding weights recorded!

Once again, the venue attracted the maximum number of anglers, with some truly phenomenal sport being enjoyed from all over the complex with a total of thirty three (33) weights over one hundred pounds being offered to the scales. Conditions on the day were pleasant with plenty of sunshine seeing a continuation of a great spell of weather. Anglers targeted the resident carp mainly with pellet waggler or shallow on the pole with some big edge fish being caught late on.

Making his way through to his fourth Mega Match This final was Maver’s own, Simon Skelton. Simon, who finished third in last September’s record-breaking final at Maver Hayfield Lakes, drew peg 23 on Lake 1 and opted to single out and ‘mug’ individual fish for most of the match before switching to his margins late on, where he found ten more big fish up to 10lbs to add to his already impressive tally. At the end of the five hours, Simon weighed in a superb 294-09-00 to topple the previous biggest weight of the 2017 campaign recorded only the week before at Westwood Lakes. Simon will surely be one to watch in this year’s final given his superb run of form in big money finals having already finished on the podium twice in previous finals.

Finishing in second place with an equally impressive two hundred pound plus weight was Garbolino’s Darren Cox. Darren secured an overall lake win from peg 100 on Lake 7 with 230-01-00 of carp up to 10lbs fishing the feeder for the first three and a half hours of the match, before switching to his edge for the final ninety minutes. Darren will now also compete in this year’s Maver British Pole Championship final at Maver Hayfield Lakes in August.

Middy’s Kieron Rich finished in third place from peg 12 on Lake 1. Fishing pole and pellet shallow for most of the match, Kieron found carp up to 9lbs to end the day with 193-14-00, also booking his place in August’s British Pole Championships.
Fourth place on the day was taken by Preston Innovations man, Andy Power. The former Mega Match This Champion drew peg 80 on Lake 5 and secured a lake win with 190-00-00 of carp up to 6lbs fishing the pellet waggler.

Rounding off an extremely competitive top five was Chris Barley. Chris drew peg 19 on Lake 1 and fished most of the match offering pellet shallow on the pole to weigh in 180-12-00 with fish up to 12lbs.

MMT Qualifier round 8

Sat 27 May 17 - Gold Valley Lakes, Hampshire

This year’s qualifier at Hampshire’s Gold Valley Lakes, Aldershot, was a difficult day out for competing anglers. With temperatures leading up to the match during the week before sky rocketing to over 30°C, the resident carp were uninterested in anglers baits and were, instead, making the most of the weather fully focused on spawning. Unfortunately, sport on the day as a result, was very hard with weights recorded on the day only going to emphasise this. Most anglers resorted to pellet waggler tactics to catch odd fish with a relatively low weight winning the day.

Next to make his way through to the 2017 Mega Match This final was Middy’s Chris Cameron (Old Ghost). The former Match This Champion drew peg 43 on Gold lake and opted to fish the pellet waggler to net ten carp up to 10lbs to offer a conservative 59-06-00 to the scales at the end of the five hours. Chris also books his place in this year’s British Pole Championship final.

Taking runner-up spot on the day was Mark Tester (Pulborough AS), who drew peg 1 on Gold. Mark bucked the trend and, instead of fishing the pellet waggler, opted to fish long down his edge at 14.5m to find eight quality carp up to 15lbs for a final 57-00-00. Mark now joins Chris in this year’s British Pole Championship final at Maver Hayfield Lakes on 20th August.

Local rod Lynas Neale secured third place from peg 14 on Gold offering 46-08-00 to the scales. Lynas started his match on the feeder, but after an uneventful start to the match, switched to pellet waggler tactics to find six carp to 8lbs and confirmed his place on the day as the third man through to the Pole Champs.

Preston’s Geoff Vallance took fourth place from peg 11 with 39-06-00, again all his fish coming to the pellet waggler, to finish just ahead of fifth placed Stefan Gent.
Stefan took a level 36lbs of carp from peg 20, also fishing the pellet waggler.

MMT Qualifier round 7

Sun 21 May 17 - Westwood Lakes, Boston

Sunday 21st May marked the second Mega Match This qualifier in as many days with the competition fast approaching the midway stages. This latest qualifier at Boston’s Westwood Lakes marked arguably the best qualifier to date in terms of the standard of fishing enjoyed by participating anglers with a massive two hundred pound plus catch winning the day! Despite torrential rain overnight, conditions on the day of the match were warm and sunny and the standard of fishing second to none with any one of at least a dozen anglers competing for a place in the minimum £50,000 final going into the final hour.

Winner on the day was Guru’s Andy Bennett (ABC). Andy drew peg 30 on Skylark and opted to fish pellet down his edge for most of the match to find fish up to 8lbs for a final weight of 235-12-00 – the largest weight of the 2017 qualifier campaign to date. Andy also qualifies for the Maver British Pole Championship final in August.

Finishing runner-up with an equally impressive weight tipping the scales over two hundred pounds was Tom Edwards (Frenzee / Dynamite Baits). Tom drew peg 14 on Skylark and caught the majority of his fish on maggot over groundbait short at 4m and down his edge. Tom found quality fish to 10lbs to offer a final 210-02-00 to book his place in the British Pole Championship final.

Third place was taken by Matt Wiles (Dynamite Baits), who secured a lake win from peg 2 on Falcon. Again, pellets in the margins did the damage with Matt finding fish in numbers on this line to finish the match with a level 189-00-00. Matt joins Andy and Tom in qualifying for this year’s British Pole Champs at Maver Hayfield Lakes later in the year.

MAP’s Aidan Mansfield (Bait-Tech) finished in fourth place from peg 12 on Skylark. Not one to buck the trend, Aidan found fish happy to feed down his edge for most of the match. Offering pellet over groundbait, Aidan found carp up to 6lbs for a final weight of 181-10-00.

Fifth place was taken by Reece Hearn (Matrix / Bag ‘Em Baits), who drew peg 28 on Skylark. Reece started his match fishing caster shallow at 6m before switching to his edge with pellets to finish the day with 180-02-00.

MMT Qualifier round 6

Sat 20 May 17 - Partridge Lakes, Warrington,

Eighty nine (89) anglers attended this second Mega Match This qualifier hosted by Partridge Lakes Fishery, Warrington. Conditions on the day were very wet making for uncomfortable fishing. That said, despite the conditions, weights on the day were reasonable with the top three anglers on the day all weighing in over one hundred pounds each.

Next to make his way through to September’s big money final was Maver Gold man, Alex Hulme. Alex drew peg 2 on Spey and opted to fish caster shallow alternating between 6m and 13m line to catch mainly F1’s with odd carp amongst them. Alex caught steady for the duration of the match to end proceedings with sixty eight fish up to 5lbs to offer a final 137-09-00 to the scales. As well as qualifying for the Match This Grand Final, Alex also secures himself a place in this year’s Maver British Pole Championship final.

Finishing close behind in second place just off the pace was Middy’s Lee Thornton. Starting his match short on caster, Lee put together a good run of F1’s before his bites slowed up. Then, coming short on paste, Lee found some bonus carp to 4lbs to weigh in 127-10-00.

Third place on the day was Kerry Kirkwood (Matrix Trafford Tackle). Kerry drew peg 111, also on Covey 5, and caught the majority of his fish on caster up in the water to weigh in 110-06-00 and secure his place in August’s British Pole Championships.

Joe Cartwright (Tri-Cast Highfield) finished in fourth place securing a lake win from peg 97 on Covey 4. Joe opted to fish maggot on the pole over groundbait to find mainly carp up to 5lbs for a weight of 96-15-00 at the end of the five hours. Joe’s efforts were rewarded with a place in the 2017 British Pole Championship final alongside Alex and Kerry with Lee Thornton having already qualified from a previous event.
Completing the top five on the day was Alan Bruce of Ray’s Tackle. Alan drew peg 117 on Covey 5 and finished the match with 89-11-00 of paste-caught carp with fish up to 4lbs.

MMT Qualifier round 5

Sat 13 May 17 - Heronbrook Fisheries, Slindon

Eighty seven (87) anglers lined the banks of New Canal, Canal, Meadow, Bridge, Island and Match lake for this latest Saturday qualifier event. Conditions on the day were cool to begin with due to plenty of cloud cover and a stiff breeze making things feel a lot colder than during the week leading up to the match. By mid-afternoon, however, there was plenty of sunshine, which brought the resident carp and F1s up in the water where they obliged on pellet and casters.

Winner on the day, and making his way through to compete in his first Match This Grand Final, was Garbolino’s Damian Bracken. Damian drew peg 27 on Meadow and caught carp and F1s pinging pellets and fishing caster shallow taking fish to 6lbs for a final 166-14-00. Damian also qualifies for this year’s Maver British Pole Championship final taking place at Maver Hayfield Lakes in August. Damian fished a superb match to see off the challenge of MAP’s Jamie Hughes just a few pegs away.
Jamie (MAP) drew peg 23 on Meadow and caught carp and F1s fishing pellet over to far side cover and meat short. Jamie found better quality fish to 8lb, but fell just short of Damian’s match-winning weight offering 153-13-00 to the scales at the end of the five hours to just miss out on making his fourth Match This final. He does, however, qualify for the British Pole Champs.

Completing the main frame finish was Andy Chrisite. Andy drew peg 39 on Canal and confirmed a lake win with 138-04-00 of F1s caught shallow on caster. Andy will now compete in this year’s British Pole Championship final for his efforts.

Former Match This finalist, Matt Arnold, finished in fourth place from peg 21 on Match Lake. Matt started his match fishing a hybrid feeder to take around 40lb before switching to his short line at just 5m on corn to take better quality fish to over 14lbs to end proceedings with a final 129-10-00.
Fifth place was taken by Maver Midlands man, Mark Fox, who drew peg 2 on Meadow. Mark fished most of the match short at 5m offering meat and worm over groundbait and micro pellets before switching to his inside line late on incorporating similar tactics to weigh in 111-02-00.

MMT Qualifier round 4

Tue 02 May 17 - Lindholme Lakes, Doncaster

One hundred and three (103) anglers attended this latest Mega Match This qualifier hosted by Garbolino Lindholme Lakes. The venue hosted this year’s Angling Trust Commercial Masters the day before with many anglers staying on to take part in the fifth Match This qualifier of 2017. Conditions on the day were far from ideal with a very strong cold wind hampering anglers best efforts, particularly on Loco, Strip and Bennies.

The next angler making his way through to the 2017 Mega Match This final was local rod, and venue expert, John Allerton (Tri-Cast / Bag ‘Em Baits). John, who is the second Tri-Cast rod through to this year’s final in as many qualifiers, drew peg 48 on Bonsai and, sheltered from the wind, decided to fish most of the match down his edge at 8 metres with maggot and pellet where he found carp and small barbel. John weighed in 137-03-00 at the end of the five hours to top the field and book his place in this year’s British Pole Championship final.

Finishing close behind taking runner-up spot was Preston’s Lee Kerry. Lee drew peg 38, also on Bonsai, and opted to fish maggot to the far bank at 16m before looking down his edge late on in the match finding bonus fish to 10lbs to weigh in 115-11-00. Lee also books his place in the 2017 British Pole Championship final for his efforts.

Rounding off the top three was Middy’s Lee Thornton. Lee drew peg 11 on Bonsai and fished maggot over to far side cover to find carp, F1s, barbel, ide, roach and perch to offer 107-10-00 to the scales seeing him through to the British Pole Championships in August.

Jonathan Firth finished in fourth place on the day from neighbouring peg 13 on Bonsai. Johnathan fished pellet up in the water for most of the match to catch mainly F1s for a final weight of 91lbs exactly.

Fifth place was taken by Barnsley Bait and Tackle owner, Liam Miller (Frenzee) from peg 72 on Bonsai. Liam fished long and short pole with casters and meat respectively to catch F1’s, chub and carp up to 5lbs to offer a final 79-07-00 to the scales.

MMT Qualifier round 3

Sun 16 April 17 - Partridge Lakes, Warrington

The first of three Mega Match This qualifiers at Warrington’s Partridge Lakes took place on Saturday 8th April with another one hundred and twenty anglers going head to head in a bid to book their place in this year’s big money final. Conditions on the day meant a slow start for most of the field on account of an overnight frost. Coupled with bright sunshine and next to no breeze at all, the match got off to a slow start. However, as the day progressed, and as temperatures continued to rise, anglers began to catch shallow with a noticeable change in the wind bringing the fish on.

Fishing his third Match This qualifier in two weeks was Daiwa Don-backed Andy Bailey. Having already finished inside the main frame on both the opening qualifiers at Mallory Park and Hayfield Lakes, Andy made it third time lucky with an overall match win from peg 121 on Covey 5. Andy caught F1s up to 3lbs on caster shallow at just 6m to end proceedings with 155-05-00 to book his place in September’s Grand Final.

Finishing close behind in second place was Kieron Marsdon (Matrix LBT). Kieron secured an overall lake win from peg 54 on Covey 3 offering 152-13-00 of mainly F1s to the scales at the end of the five hours. Having narrowly missed out on a place in the Grand Final Kieran will now fish the Maver British Pole Championship final in August.

Taking third place on the day was fellow Matrix LBT rod, Gavin Vernon. Gavin also secured a lake win from peg 46 on Covey 2 with 135-15-00 of carp, ide and F1s. Gavin found fish shallow on casters, then swithed to his margins late on with worm finding carp up to 6lbs, also booking a place in the British Pole Championship final.

David Pimlott (Fox International) secured fourth place with 131-06-00 from peg 101 on Covey 5. David found most of his fish down his edge on worm, including a real specimen that registered 23lbs on the scales, helping him take the final British Pole Championship qualification place.
Fifth place was taken by Mark Lucas (Mosella) from peg 25 on Covey 2. Mark offered 127-13-00 to the scales at the end of the five hours.

MMT Qualifier round 2

Sun 02 April 17 - Maver Hayfield Lakes, Doncaster

The second Mega Match This qualifier in as many days marked another sell out event at Maver Hayfield Lakes. Conditions on the day were mixed with temperatures overnight dropping as low as 3°C coupled with period of bright warm sunshine later in the afternoon. Fishing on the day was extremely difficult with many anglers catching just odd fish. That said, however, despite the weights being relatively low, it was an incredibly close match which, going into the final hour, anyone could have won.

Next to book his place in September’s final was Marukyu-backed Leigh Hodgkinson. Leigh drew peg 68 on Adams and caught the majority of his weight fishing the pellet waggler landing carp to 10lbs to end proceedings with a modest 64-12-00. Like many on the day, Leigh struggled to find the fish in any numbers, but managed to do enough on the day to secure his place in British Pole Championship final also.

Finishing in second place on the day was Andy Bailey (Daiwa Dons). Following his third place finish from the Glebe on Saturday, Andy Bailey rounded off a successful weekend securing an overall lake win on Island from peg 42. Andy weighed in 58-11-00 of carp caught on pellet shallow.

Third place on the day was taken by Martin Wood (Markham Main) from peg 80 on Adams. Martin’s match got off to a slow start with both men either side of him catching well early on. However, Martin managed to find the fish late on fishing the pellet waggler and pellet to depth on the pole to offer 56-02-00 to the scales thus securing his place in this year’s British Pole Championship final.

Barnsley Bait & Tackle shop owner Liam Miller (Frenzee) finished in fourth place on the day from peg 47 on Adams. Alternating between pellet on the long pole, bomb and pellet and the pellet waggler, Liam was able to keep fish coming to the net throughout the day to weigh in hard earned 49-09-00.
Fifth place was taken by Luke Hawksworth (Colmic Woodlands), who drew peg 36 on Adams. Like many, Luke found odd carp on the pellet waggler to weigh in 46-11-00 at the end of the five hours.

MMT Qualifier round 1

Sat 01 April 17 - The Glebe / Mallory Park, Leicester

The 2017 Mega Match This qualifier campaign began on a high with a sell-out event at The Glebe. Conditions on the day were very cold for the first couple of hours with quite a blustery Westerly wind, which eased off during the latter stages of the match. Temperatures, as a result, warmed up a couple of degrees, which saw respectable weights recorded given the time of year.

First to secure his place in the minimum £50,000 Match This Grand Final on Saturday September 2nd was Dynamite Baits rod, Rob Wootton. Rob drew peg 2 on Lake 1 and opted to fish a feeder for the full five hours to find quality carp on both pellet and maggot. Rob offered 146-09-00 to the scales to see off the challenge from reigning Match This Champion, Jon Whincup, to confirm his place in UK match angling’s richest final.

Taking up runner up spot, and missing out on his third consecutive Match This final by an agonisingly small margin was Frenzee man, and current Champion, Jon Whincup. Jon drew peg 17 on Lake 1 and, like Rob, fished a feeder for the duration of the match. Offering dumbbells on the hook with wetted micros moulded around the feeder, Jon found carp up to 8lbs to weigh in 145-08-00. Despite narrowly missing out on his chance to defend his title, Jon has booked his place in the 2017 British Pole Championship final taking place on Sunday 20th August.

Finishing in third place on the day was Andy Bailey (Daiwa Dons). Andy secured an overall lake win from peg 109 on Lake 7 weighing in 141-07-00. Alternating between short and the long pole with pellet, Andy found good sized fish up to 7lbs to put some distance between himself and fourth placed man on the day, Keiron Rich. Andy also books his place in this year’s British Pole Championship final.

Keiron Rich (Middy) occupied fourth place with a weight of 127-14-00 from peg 1 on Lake 1. Keiron caught the majority of his weight from down his edge on pellet with carp up to 6lbs.
Rounding off the top five was Bryan Travis from peg 105 on Lake 7.
